March 7th 2015

A good turnout of Society members with invited guests attended our annual celebration of the signing of the rules, 271 years to the day they were created. This year our venue was the Queen Charlotte Rooms in the heart of Leith.

After lunch, our speaker was Lionel Freedman, whose topic was "The first 10 years of the World Hickory Championship".

Lionel honestly commented on the "downs" of the event as well as the many "ups". But his overwhelming feeling was that the event has returned golf to an earlier time, the original design of many courses was now back into play, some aspects having been made redundant by the technology of the modern game.

The event is now a genuine "World" event, he expected 14 different countries to be represented at this year's event in October. Hopefully, Sandy Lyle will return to defend the title he won in 2014. Another "first" for 2015 is the venue - Carnoustie Links, the first current Open Championship venue to host the event. Please click here to connect to the event site.

The day ended with a very special occasion - the bestowing of honorary life membership of the Society to our President Douglas Foulis. Douglas was one of those who was in at the very beginning of the Society and has been instrumental since then in ensuring the development of the Society to where it is today. His leadership, wit and above all, fascinating stories have greatly added to the enjoyment that membership brings.

Thank you Douglas from all the members, past and present.
