March 7th 2017

Members and friends of the Society met for our anniversary celebration of the signing of the first written rules of golf by John Rattray. This year we chose the Malmaison Hotel in the heart of Leith.

An excellent meal was followed by a fascinating talk from our guest speaker Neil Laird, whose subject was “Robert Biggar”. Robert was the first Bruntsfield golfer, Neil had a number of historic pictures with him and vividly described opinions on the history of golf at Bruntsfield. Perhaps learning more about this subject will stand us in good stead when we play BSH at Bruntsfield Links later this year? Or maybe not!

The particular significance for our Society though is that Robert Biggar was an entrant in the 1744 competition on Leith Links. He was also an interesting character being clubmaker as well as a golfer.

This was the first event for our new President, John Dixon. So of course one of his first tasks was to present Neil with a Society tie!
